In Nürnberg the Spirit of Christmas is in the air from the first Sunday in Advent. Can you meet in a more inspiring city? When the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt, Nürnberg’s Christmas market, opens, the scent of lebkuchen and glühwein (mulled wine) waft through the city. Festive illuminations shine over the streets and – if you’re lucky – the old houses are covered in snow. The pre-Christmas hustle and bustle obviously dominates Nürnberg’s shopping precincts too, but anyone with a little time to spend is sure to find a suitable present in the many unusual boutiques and shops. The centuries-old tradition of the Christkindlesmarkt is carefully cultivated. The wooden stalls sell only high-quality, partly hand-made articles like Christmas tree decorations, wooden nutcrackers, cribs and, of course, the Nürnberg tinsel angels and “Zwetschgenmännla”, figures made with plums.
